My Story

Hi, I’m Rudy, a British university student who did Bronze, Silver and Gold DofE whilst at school (that’s my Gold expedition group in the photo — with me on the far right with my eyes closed).

For me, by far the most exciting (and most enjoyable!) part of the DofE experience was the expeditions, and as Team Leader I wanted to make sure my teammates felt the same. This meant proper preparation and planning.

However, I found that there was a complete lack of quality information online. So many products are slapped with that ‘recommended for DofE’ logo by the big outdoor retailers, without any explanation of why you might need it or what it’s good for (for example, most people probably don’t need a storm shelter).

I couldn’t find any nitty-gritty, to-the-point advice on some of the most important aspects of a DofE expedition, and the award as a whole, from someone who’s been there and done it.

Personally, I find it a shame that so many people finish the Bronze expedition thinking it was the worst two days of their life. With good preparation, DofE only gets as hard as putting one foot in front of the other. Better yet - it’s actually fun!

So, I decided to write a blog on how to get the most out of your award by properly preparing for the expedition and undertaking sections you’ll enjoy. After all, you can become a DofE Hero too.
